WWDC 2012 – After New iPad, will our next gadget be a new iPod Touch or iPhone?

(Update – June 24, 2012) TopicTech, who brought us the magical unboxing of MacBook Pro with Retina Display, has now uploaded a review.  If you are wondering if this laptop is the right fit for you, and maybe you don’t have a local store to go to, watch the review.

(Update – June 19, 2012) WWDC has come to a close and the big hardware announcement was neither an iPhone or an iPod Touch, although iOS6 was extensively covered.  The newest hardware came in the form of the MacBook Pro with Retina display.  Here’s a great unboxing video of the latest addition to the Apple hardware line.

The World Wide Developers Conference 2012, WWDC 2012 for short, will kick off Monday June 11, 2012 and the question on everyone’s mind is, “What will be the next big announcement?”  Here’s Apple’s iconic imagery for the event:

WWDC 2012

During the March 7, 2012 New iPad announcement at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Tim Cook (CEO) commented after the big announcement that this was one of many to come.

One rumor leading up to the March 7 announcement, was a smaller 6.5″ to 7″ E-reader styled version of the iPad, which drew from a few leaked photos of smaller screens being manufactured for Apple.  Apple is standing behind Steve Jobs’ words, and they’re personal testing, that suggests that the average person does not want a smaller iPad.  However, this does give a little more credibility to a rumor of a larger iPod Touch.  The iPod Touch has become the “mobile gaming platform” for Apple and the idea of a larger screen to play games on appeals to a lot of people.

A rumor with a little more substance would be the announcement of the iPhone 5.  A new iteration with 4G Technology (HSPA+, DC-HSPA, and 4G LTE).  With the New iPad having these 4G technologies on board, it’s only a matter of time before a new iPhone is announced, but is it too soon.  The iPhone 4S was announced October 4, 2011, the day before Steve Jobs’ death.  Will Apple want a little more time to take the iPhone 5 to the next level, or would the inclusion of 4G be more than enough justification for a new model?

In my opinion, there will be a new hardware announcement at WWDC 2012.  I’m not 100% sure whether or not it’s going to be a new iPhone or a new iPod Touch.  Personally, I’m hoping for a new iPhone, it’s almost time to upgrade my 3GS.
