The DBOI Afterthoughts 30/03/09

“Religion?”

Well I’ve managed to talk about politics and the economy, now it’s time for religion’s turn.  This podcast focuses more on the argument of “religion in schools”.  Enjoy.

Hey! Nice podcast. I actually saw your comment on Amazon for the Behringer XENYX 802 Mixer, which I too own and on the Consumerism episode I thought it sounded pretty good. What sounds cards do you use to record with? Unfortunately my motherboard is a failure and it produces all sorts of buzzing and static. So I have resorted to using a cheap USB sound card which is better, but still produces a little noise.
I also have the Behringer C-1 Studio Condenser mic, which I have to say is a decent mic.
I use FX send on the mixer so its easier to control what goes in and out of the computer. For cables I use a 1/8″ to RCA cable and a 1/4″ to RCA adapter. I have found using this, instead of using just 1/4″ to 1/8″ cable reduces some unwanted sound. That whole cable setup is for Line-In 3/4. Line-In 5/6 is currently unused.
How do you have your mixer setup?

    Hey Evan,

Thanks for the friendly words. I’ll try to answer all your questions in order. If I miss something just lemme know.

I’m actually recording using the onboard soundchip of my motherboard. The motherboard is the Intel® Desktop Board DP45SG. You can check out it’s specs through the link.

You didn’t ask about my mic, but I’ll tell you anyways, it’s a simple Peavey PV-1. Bottom of the line, but when the line has thorough quality control you get a good product at ever level.

Having used more serious mixers from Mackie in the past, I run main out to the Line Level Input of the computer.

Wiring. That’s really the key isn’t it? I got my hands on a lot of wires for free based on what I had in the workshop and what other people had tossed out due to length requirements. Recently I threw out my mic cable, it was introducing a LOT of noise. To replace, I went with Monster Cable Pro-500 Mic Cable. So that’s XLR to XLR, Line 1 on the mixer. My main mix outputs are converted to RCA from 1/4″ with inspected inline converters, and then it’s RCA to 1/8″ Monster THX cable.

Hope all of that answered the big question of how my mixer is setup.
